Costa Rica

Costa Rica is the easiest place on our list to reach and one of the easiest to settle into. A short flight from most of the United States puts you in cloud forest, on a quiet river, or a few minutes from an empty stretch of Pacific coast. The country has spent decades protecting that landscape, and it shows — roughly a quarter of it is national park or reserve. Programmes here tend to be outdoors, unhurried, and built around water, forest and food.

Pura vida is less a slogan than a working assumption: that a good life is a slow one, and that most things can wait until tomorrow.

Costa Rica

A Blue Zone, and What That Actually Means

The Nicoya Peninsula is one of a handful of places worldwide where people reliably live past a hundred, and researchers have spent years asking why. The answers are unglamorous. People move all day without calling it exercise, eat beans, squash and corn, keep close friendships late into life, and hold on to a strong sense of purpose. None of it is proprietary and none of it is for sale, which is rather the point.

Costa Rica is also simply a comfortable place to recover — stable, welcoming, well served by good clinics and good food, with English widely spoken. For a first trip abroad, or for anyone who wants the reset without the culture shock, it is usually where we start.
